February 13, 2012, (Sawf News) – Kajol looked seriously stylish in a black Shantanu & Nikhil sari inspired gown at Max Stardust Awards 2012 at Bhavans College Grounds in Mumbai on Friday, February 10.

One of Bollywood’s most talented actress, Kajol isn’t so well known for her sense of style; so we were more than a little surprised to see her rock the re-invention of the sari by Noida based designers Shantanu and Nikhil. The number was from the designer duo’s new Red Carpet fashion line, and Kajol got to wear it before its scheduled debut at the Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week, which opens February 15 with Shantanu & Nikhil’s lineup.

The spaghetti strap dress was accented with crystal and bead embellishments on the bodice and over the front drape from shoulder to the waist. The dress featured a cascade starting at the shoulder and ending at her ankles at the back, mimicking a sari pallav.

Nikhil explained the dress to sawfnews.com exclusively:

“It’s a new line of contemporary saris we have designed. This sari is a modern take on a traditional sari. Fabrics are silk jersey and its one piece. You don’t have to tie it. Its easy to wear and has a strong influence of India.”

The designer duo felt Kajol was the perfect model to showcase their creation.

“Kajol was the perfect person for this as she is a contemporary Indian with a strong sense of being. This is really our target customer. Its for the woman who feels empowered wearing the essence of India without its preconceived notions.”

Kajol accessorized with metallic silver platform heels, a crystal encrusted clutch and exquisite jewelry consisting of drop earrings and multiple chunky rings.

She wore her hair in luscious curls by the side of her face. Makeup comprised glossy pinkish brown lipstick and kohl liner on the eyes.

Kajol came to the Awards show with sister Tanisha and mom Tanuja, the latter was honored with a Stardust Lifetime Achievement Award for her long spanning Bollywood career. Ajay Devgn did not attend.

An interesting side note: During her recent visit to India Oprah saw Sameera Reddy wearing a Shantanu Nikhil sari and loved it. The designer duo recently dispatched a custom number of the same style for her.

Nikhil tweeted to his followers: “So guys this is the saree that @Oprah loved. Have designed one especially for her and now it’s on it’s way to her. pic.twitter.com/jZdGbMJ4″

We wouldn’t be surprised to see more Hollywood celebrities succumb to the exotic sartorial blend of the east and the west.

Well done Kajol! Well done Shantanu and Nikhil!
